Why I Built an AI That Programs Like I Do (And Why It Took 25 Years to Trust It)
I held off on this one for a long time.
Not because the technology wasn't ready. Because I wasn't sure I could make a machine program the way I program — and if it couldn't, I didn't want my name on it.
There are a lot of AI workout generators out there now. Most of them are exactly what I was afraid of. You type in "8-week hypertrophy block" and you get a list of exercises that looks fine on paper, follows no real logic, ignores the athlete's sport, ignores where they are in the season, ignores whether they're hurt, and prescribes a tempo of 2-0-2 on everything because that's the default. It's the same problem I wrote about at the very start of this series: a program built around habits instead of answers.
I didn't want to build a faster version of a bad program.
So I spent a long time on a harder question: could I get a machine to make the same decisions I make — for the same reasons I make them?
The answer turned out to be yes. But only because the thinking was already systematized. That's the part most people miss about this. The AI isn't the intelligence. The system is the intelligence. The AI is just what makes it fast.
The thing automated programming always gets wrong
A program isn't a list of exercises. I've said that in different ways throughout this whole series, and it's the single idea everything else hangs on.
A program is a sequence of decisions.
Which movement, and why.
Which loading scheme, and why.
What tempo, what rest, what velocity target — each one chosen to serve a specific goal for a specific athlete at a specific point in their year.
Change the sport, the phase, the goal, or the athlete's injury status, and the right answer changes with it.
Every automated tool I'd ever seen collapsed all of that into a template. Pick a goal, get a spreadsheet. The athlete adapts to the program instead of the program adapting to the athlete — except now it's worse, because there's no coach in the loop catching the mismatch.
The reason these tools fail isn't that the AI is dumb. It's that nobody gave the AI a system to follow. You can't automate judgment you haven't defined.
If your own programming logic lives in your head as a feel — "I just know what a hockey player needs in late off-season" — then a machine can't reproduce it, because you've never actually written down what it is.

So the build wasn't really about AI. It was about handing a machine the same decision framework I'd hand a young coach on my staff — and making it follow the rules even when no one's watching.
The rules I refused to compromise on
Here's what separates this from a generic generator, and it's worth being specific, because the specificity is the product.
It programs by archetype, not by template. A performance program, a hypertrophy program, a general physical preparation block, and a return-to-play rehab progression are four fundamentally different animals. They use different day splits, different exercise selection logic, different volume and intensity profiles. The builder detects which archetype your inputs call for and structures the whole week accordingly — and if it reads the situation differently than you do, you override it. Four archetypes, four genuinely different logics. Not one template with the numbers swapped.
It screens for injury across the entire session — not just the main lift. This is where most tools are dangerous. They'll de-load your barbell squat because you flagged a knee, then prescribe depth jumps in the warm-up. The builder applies injury logic to every phase of the day. A knee injury removes flight-phase work everywhere it appears, including the plyometric and movement-prep blocks. A shoulder injury pulls overhead and ballistic pressing out of the entire session, not just the strength portion. Screening isn't a filter you run once. It's a rule that governs the whole day.
It prescribes energy systems that match the sport, the phase, and the goal. This is the ESD framework from earlier in the series, built directly into the day. The conditioning that shows up isn't generic "finish with a circuit." It uses the naming system, the tempo rules, the seasonal model — all of it. Exercises are named by the system's convention, not by region or trend. Tempo couples to load and to phase: slower eccentrics early in the off-season, explosive intent as you move toward the season. Strength volume is highest early off-season and tapers as speed, plyometric, and conditioning volume rises into the season. These aren't cosmetic. They're the rules that make a program coherent instead of just full.
None of that is the AI being clever. That's the AI being obedient to a system that was already right.
Why the coach stays in the driver's seat
I need to be clear about something, because it's the part I care about most.
This tool does not replace the coach. It was never built to. The day I think a piece of software should make the final call on an athlete's program is the day I quit.
What it does is take the part of programming that's mechanical — the structuring, the sequencing, the cross-referencing of sport against phase against goal against injury — and do it in seconds instead of hours. It gives you a complete, coherent, system-true draft. Then it hands you the pen.
Every program the builder generates drops into an inline edit mode. You can rewrite any field. You can swap an exercise, change the loading, adjust a note. Every movement also carries a Progress and a Regress control. Those aren't shuffle buttons. If the conditioning isn't right for the day you're actually having, tell it what changed — "no bike available" — and it rebuilds that block alone and leaves the rest of the session intact.

That's the relationship I wanted. The machine does the heavy lifting on structure. The coach does what only a coach can do — look at the athlete in front of them and decide. This is the part I didn't expect to care about as much as I do.
A program that lives in a PDF is a program that dies in a text message. You send it, the athlete opens it once, and two weeks later it's buried under everything else on their phone. You have no idea what they actually did. So when it's time to write the next block, you're guessing — at what got finished, what got skipped, what was too heavy the whole time and nobody told you.

They open their Training Log with their email and the program is already there. It shows them the session in front of them, not the whole block — what's on for today. They check work off as they go. They log what they actually lifted and how hard it felt. Every exercise carries its demonstration video, so nobody is standing in the weight room guessing at what a movement is supposed to look like.
And it turns into something they can actually read. Estimated 1RM trending across the block. Weekly volume. How consistently they've trained — not how consistently they think they've trained. What RPE they're giving at a given load, which is the number that tells you whether the load is right before the bar speed tells you the hard way.
That matters more than it sounds like it should. An athlete who can see their own numbers move is an athlete who logs honestly. And an honest log is the thing you've never been able to get out of a PDF.
It also means the record exists. When it's time to write the next block, the block they just finished is sitting there — what got done, what got skipped, what they were actually lifting — instead of living in somebody's memory.
That's the loop this whole series has been circling. You program from a system. The athlete trains. The training tells you what to program next. That's monitoring, and it's the difference between writing the next block and guessing at it.
Who this is actually for
If you're a coach who already has a system you trust completely and the time to execute it by hand for every athlete — you might not need this. Honestly.
But most coaches I know are not in that situation. Most coaches are managing more athletes than they have hours for. They're writing programs late at night, reusing last cycle's block because there isn't time to build a new one, copying and pasting and hoping the athlete doesn't notice the program wasn't really built for them.
